Green Card Lottery - Passport requirements
To participate in the Green Card Lottery, you must possess a valid and unexpired passport from your country of nationality.
I don't have a passport, what can I do?
If you do not posess a valid passport, you can select this on the registration form. You must submit your passport information within September 2023 so that we can submit your application.
Passport expiration date
If your passport is set to expire soon, it's advisable to renew it before your visa interview to avoid any complications. Having a valid passport is crucial for the DV program, as it is a primary form of identification and travel document for international travel.
Passport rules for Green Card holders
As a Green Card holder there are certain exceptions regarding the need for a passport. For example, if you are traveling within the United States or its territories (such as Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands), you do not need a passport. Additionally, if you are traveling to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean by land or sea, you can use your Green Card instead of a passport. However, if traveling by air, you will still need a passport.
Exceptions
There are expetions to the passport requirement when applying for a Green Card if are unable to obtain a passport and fall under one of three limited exemptions:

Stateless Individuals
A high school education means the successful completion of a formal course of elementary and secondary education comparable to a 12-year course in the United States. -
Nationals of a Communist-controlled country
You must provide evidence to establish that you are unable to obtain a passport from the government of your country of nationality. -
